Part of her ongoing research project at the Sibelius Academy, Uniarts Helsinki, this is Arja's sixth solo album. KANTERVO includes new music on the copies of some museum kanteles. The music is based on Karelian kantele improvisation as part of the ancient runosong culture. The kantele player and researcher Arja Kastinen specializes in the 19th century Karelian kantele improvisation. By exploring the philosophy, instruments, tuning, and playing technique of the early music tradition, and bringing this knowledge into musical improvisations, she combines history and the modern times. Beautiful and varied landscapes painted with different acoustic kanteles. Often times meditative, but with a couple songs with higher energy create a welcomed diversity between the songs. I feel like this is exactly how kantele songs were meant to be made; contemplative with a fresh squeeze of ingenuity. Eva's take on music is both a great homage to the tradition and a new breeze to the contemporary scene. Eva's debut is an important milestone album within the folk genre. Darkmurmur
